Seniors Transportation Program
This program provides transportation
for isolated seniors.
Transportation is provided by volunteer
drivers in the volunteers vehicles . This is a door to door
service available for medical and other appointments. There is
a fee for this service:
$8.00 return trip locally within New
West
.50 per kilometer to/from New West
to adjacent or neighbouring communities
Client is responsible for the additional
cost of parking
Are you a good driver? Do you have
spare time? Would you like to make a difference?
The recently published Seniors Task Force in New Westminster identified
a need for better transport for seniors. For many, public transit,
even Handydart, is not an option and taxi service is not affordable.
Friends or family are often not able to provide transport.
Our office constantly receives calls from seniors in the community
looking for assistance in getting out of their home, mainly to
medical appointments. What they are looking for is door to door
service, where the client is picked up at his/her door, escorted
to the appointment, waited on until the appointment is finished
and then returned to their door. In most cases this would involve
3-4 hours of volunteer time.
A recent request was from an elderly lady who was visually impaired.
She said that she could not use a taxi or Handydart as she had
great difficulty finding her way to offices that often found her
in unfamiliar locations. Just imagine being dropped at a large
medical building or a hospital and being expected to find your
way about. This could be a very frightening or even dangerous
situation. As previously stated, we have requests, but we can't
provide the service until we build a core of volunteer drivers.
Driver's can provide service according to their schedules and
will be compensated for some out of pocket expenses as mileage
is paid. We would be delighted to hear from you.
